Child Company of IDM SÜDTIROL / ALTO ADIGE
Ignaz Niedrist is a family - winery situated in Cornaiano at the heart of the wine growing area of Alto Adige, Italy, cultivating 12 hectares and producing around 60.000 bottles per year. The family has owned the winery for over 170 years, but political and social circumstances during the two World Wars have forced their ancestors to quit the wine production. Only in 1989, Ignaz and Elisabeth Niedrist, reactivated the winery with the clear objective of producing high quality wines. Since then, the daily family life cycled around vineyard works and wine making. Today, they can look back at over 30 shared vintages. Only recently, the next generation Maria and Johannes joined the family business, amplifying forces by connecting experience and knowledge with modern scientific approaches acquired during their studies. Gentle practices in the vineyards, controlled yields and first-class sites are the main pillars in their drive for quality. That includes the labor-intensive process of composting cow dung as the only source of fertilizer for the vines. Great importance must also be attached to the best possible match between grape variety and terroir. Vineyards with a high level of biological diversity produce complex wines full of harmony and character. Therefore, the work in the cellar is simple and traditional; good sites and first-class grapes make too much technology unnecessary. With knowledge acquired over generations, continuous studying and dedication to manual working all Niedrist family members are committed to produce wines representing their places of origin, wines with character and vitality.
